Exploring Harbor Country's Natural Side

Chikaming Open Lands is a land conservation organization headquartered in downtown Lakeside.  Apart from the great work that they do conserving natural habitats and keeping our area from overdevelopment, they also offer a number of delightful outreach events.  Many, but not all, of these are held in the summer, so put these dates on your calendar!

Thursday May 13st: 8:45 p.m. at the New Buffalo Public Boat launch.  The Voyager canoe moonlight cruise will be led by Love Creek naturalists Kip Miller and Pat Underwood as they guide you through the still waters of the Louis J. Sima Marsh.

Saturday June 23rd: 9:45 a.m. at the COL office. COL Stewardship Committee chair Bob Tatina will lead a hike through Robinson Woods to discover the flora and fauna in this lovely wood.

Saturday July 14th : 10 a.m.   at Weko Beach in Bridgman.  Nauralist Pat Underwood will lead this exploration of the wild side of a Lake Michigan beach to look for beach plants, signs of animals and learn what Indian beads used to be.

Saturday July 28th: 1 p.m. at the New Buffalo Performing Arts Center. Aimee Pico, raptor expert, will bring in 5 species of owls from the Lake Milton Raptor Education Center.  Learn where they live and where to spot them and what they live to eat.

Saturday August 25th: 1 p.m. at the New Buffalo Public Boat Launch.  A daytime glide through the Louis J. Sima marsh, to see all the work that has been done to eradicate non-native species  this marsh, thanks to grants and donations.

Saturday October 20th: 2:30 p.m. at the Chikaming Township Park. Naturalist Pat Underwood will lead a visit to the best fall color spots.
